 Bensalem students protest layoffs of music, art teachers

 Student activism and discontent were on full display Tuesday afternoon at the Bensalem Township School District administration building.

Playing their instruments, carrying signs and drawing messages in colored chalk on the steps of the administration building, a crowed of more than 50 students, alumni and parents showed up to protest the proposed layoffs of three full-time music and three full-time art teachers in the district’s elementary schools for next school year.

The layoffs are part of 40 proposed staff cuts in the 2017-18 budget the school board is scheduled to vote on at its June 14 meeting.

Students believe the layoffs in music and arts would have negative effects at all levels.
