Quaker Mfg. may close; lay off 115

SALEM — Quaker Mfg. Corp may be shutting down later this month, according to a letter hand-delivered to employees Tuesday and forwarded anonymously by an employee to the Salem News late Tuesday night.

“I am sorry to inform you that, after investigating all alternatives, Quaker Mfg. Corp. may be required to cease operations permanently at its facility located at 187 Georgetown Road, Salem, Ohio,” the letter said, noting the notice was provided per federal regulations which require notice to employees of a pending closure.

The letter said if required to shut down, the company expects to lay off all employees during a 14-day period beginning June 20, affecting 115 workers, both salaried and hourly personnel. The outcome depends on several unknown factors at this point, including whether a receiver will be appointed by a court and what will happen as a result of that appointment if it happens. Employees will be notified in writing of any changes in the 14-day period when layoffs are expected to occur.

“Quaker’s financial circumstances are in no way the fault of its wonderful team of employees,” the letter said.
